Dudley Hudgins

November 4, 1937 — October 3, 2017

Dudley R. Hudgins, 79, passed away at his home in Kansas City, on October 3, 2017.

He was born November 4, 1937 in Chicago, IL, and the family moved to Kansas City one year later.  Although money was scarce, he felt blessed being raised by a nurturing mother and father, Helen S. and Dudley W. Hudgins.  Living most of his life in the Kansas City area, he graduated from Southwest High School in 1955 and the University of Kansas in 1959.  In later years, he took great pleasure watching KU football and basketball with his wife, Pegge.

After college graduation, he served two years in the US Army.  He then worked two years with Bendix Corp. as a production control expediter.  The “love career” of his life was with Marion Laboratories for 31 years.  He was a successful salesman for 8 years in San Antonio, opening up a new sales territory in the ‘60’s.  Dudley always felt that those early years pioneering a new company to the physicians of Texas was the biggest adventure of his life. He was then promoted back to headquarters in KC to become Director of Sales Training, and to do what he loved (and had dreamed about doing for a long time)...helping young salespeople become successful!  For over 30 years, he developed Marion's sales program and authored launch plans for products that led to the growth of the company that, in turn, contributed so much to the greater Kansas City community.

Dudley and Pegge enjoyed singing in various choirs together for many years, especially in recent years with the St. Thomas More Catholic Church choir.

After retiring in 1992, he continued his life of service to Kansas Citians in need, counseling those with addictions, helping retirees transition successfully, and ministering spiritual care to the sick at area hospitals.  For almost two decades, he volunteered as a Chaplain at three local hospitals.  He felt his early Christian ministry prepared him well for these positions - teaching Sunday school at Zion Lutheran Church, conducting men’s chapel service at City Union Mission, and as volunteer chaplain for US Navy Sea Cadets from 1990-94.

More than anything else, he loved his wife Pegge, his children and grandchildren.  His life’s motto was to “relish the moment” as stated in Psalm 118:24: “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dudley and Helen Hudgins (Brown); and two siblings, Don Hudgins and Faye Musselman.  He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Pegge Hudgins (Resch); their four children, Todd and wife Elizabeth Woods, Brian and wife Kiela Hudgins, Mianne and husband David Sell, Randall Hudgins; and their families, 12 grandchildren - Luke, Brady, Wyatt, Conor, Dylan and Shanna Hudgins; Blake and Alison Sell; Grace Woods, and Josh, Tony and Sarah Cazares; and one great-grandchild - Ellie Cazares.

There will be a visitation from 12:30 - 1:30pm, followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:30pm, Saturday October 7, 2017, at St Thomas More Catholic Church, 11822 Holmes Rd, Kansas City, MO 64131.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to City Union Mission in honor of Dudley Hudgins (donations can be made online at https://cityunionmission.org), or to St Thomas More Catholic Church.
