Julia Culliss

Julia Ann Culliss, a long-time resident of Overland Park, KS, passed away at the age of 77 on June 6, 2018 after a short but courageous battle with non-smoker's lung cancer.  Julia was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Edna Sprouse of Morgantown, WV, and her sister, Mary Jane Goff of Nitro, WV. She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Kim Culliss of De Soto, KS and Gary Culliss and Shauna Fitzgibbons of New Canaan, CT, as well as her six grandchildren Ella, Emerson, Hudson, Alexandra, Elle, and Bronson.

Julia was born January 9, 1941 in Morgantown, WV. She graduated in 1962 from West Virginia University where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She worked for the Kansas City Medical Group as a Medical Technologist from 1966 until her retirement in 2006.

Julia's special joy was spending time with her grandchildren.  Her favorite place to be was on a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks relaxing with family and friends. Julia loved talking about sports and always enjoyed watching a good game. Sitting next to Julia during a game was pure joy. March Madness was a particular highlight for her. She rooted for her Kansas Jayhawks and West Virginia Mountaineers, but in true Julia spirit, she always wished a great game for all teams that advanced that far. As a member of Valley View United Methodist Church for over 50 years, Julia enjoyed volunteering with the Evening Care group, where she worked with adults and teens with special abilities. Julia survived metastatic breast cancer back in 1981, which inspired her to become a director of the Shawnee Mission Breast Cancer support group and help others battle the disease.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 PM on Monday, June 11, 2018 at Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66210. Funeral service will be at 11 AM on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at Valley View United Methodist Church, 8412 W. 95th St, Overland Park, KS 66212. The family will have a private burial ceremony following the service.
