Leon Miller

September 4, 1944 — December 6, 2019

Leon F. Miller of Overland Park, KS passed away peacefully and surrounded by family at Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, MO on December 6, 2019 at the age of 75 after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on Labor Day, September 4, 1944 in Coffee County AL, the fifth child of Mattie Davis Hall and Lonnie Miller.

Leon joined the United States Air Force after graduating high school from Poitiers American Highschool in France and served his country for 4 years stationed in Colorado Springs CO. He spent his career in transportation (trucking) and accounting working for Yellow Freight Systems starting in Denver CO and transferring to Overland Park KS in 1970. He spent 20 years with Yellow Freight Systems ending that portion of his career as Vice President of Administration and continued his career in transportation running Central Virginia Trucking in Lynchburg VA. Leon later changed career course working in accounting for Midwest Express Corp and Sprint PCS before retiring from Kansas City Southern Railroad in 2010.

Leon loved playing golf with his friends and sons, working in his yard and completing many home improvement projects, watching baseball, basketball and football.  Visiting his family in Alabama and Minnesota and spending time with family and close friends; often playing pool, cards or pinball in the basement, were among his favorite pastimes. He was an active member of the church and servant to the Lord, acting as Deacon at Kansas City Church of Christ in Overland Park KS and spent many years managing the church’s’ prayer requests and food pantry for families in need. Leon was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was very committed to supporting and helping his family in whatever capacity. And was a loved member of the community who was always willing to lend a hand or a shoulder to anyone who had need.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Lonnie Miller, Mattie Hall and Theo Hall, sisters; Dorothy Cooper, Betty Grace Smith and Sherry Whitman, brother; Lonnell Miller and son; Ron Miner (Lori).

Leon is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Betsie [Slagh Miner] Miller of Overland Park KS, sisters; Joanne Hartzog (Hayward) of Deatsville AL and Jennifer Bowen of Ozark AL, daughter-in-law; Lori Miner of Shawnee KS, son; Kevin Miner (Tammie) of Overland Park KS, daughter; Karel Johnston (Adam) of Andover MN, son; Steve Miller (Karen) of Lakeville MN, 10 wonderful grandchildren; Ryan, Ashley, Amber, Drew, Megan, Adam, Gage, Cora, Faith, Bryn; 4 adorable great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Though Leon will be greatly missed his family and friends are comforted knowing his suffering has ended and he is in Heaven with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In lieu of flowers, Leon’s family requests donations be made to Kansas City Hospice House 1500 Meadow Lake Pkwy Kansas City, MO 64114 that they may continue to provide comforting care and end of life services to others.

Services will be held on December 14, 2019 at 1:30 PM with visitation 1 hour preceding at:

Kansas City Church of Christ 10250 Quivira Rd, Lenexa, KS.

Private interment will be at Johnson County Funeral Chapel and Memorial Gardens 11200 Metcalf Avenue Overland Park, KS following the funeral service.
