Franklin Delano Carroll

Franklin Delano Carroll, 92, passed away on August 31, 2026, in Olathe, Kansas. Frank, a devoted husband, father, Christian, veteran, and law enforcement officer, was born on July 8, 1934, in Paulding County, Georgia. He was the 11th surviving child of Spencer and Lulu Carroll.

Frank proudly served his country in the United States Air Force at the end of the Korean War. He later dedicated 22 years to protecting the people of Kansas City as an officer with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, including 14 years as a homicide detective. Frank was the first and only among his siblings to earn a college degree and went on to receive a Master of Science degree in criminal justice administration from Central Missouri State University. His career reflected his courage, integrity, inquisitive nature, and deep commitment to public service.

A gifted athlete, Frank lettered in three sports at Mount Berry and Rockmart High Schools, earning the nickname “Jim Thorpe” after the legendary multisport athlete. His lifelong love of sports continued through coaching youth sports and enthusiastically supporting the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals, rarely missing a Royals game on radio or television.

Frank’s family camping and boating trips became the stuff of legend, producing stories so improbable that they often sounded exaggerated—and, like many of Frank’s stories, only grew more colorful with each retelling. He enjoyed telling jokes, fishing—guided by his rule, “I throw nothing back”—and playing cards or shooting pool with family and friends, particularly when a friendly wager made the game a little more interesting. He also loved traveling and taking cruises, especially when they created lasting memories with the family and friends he loved so dearly.

Above all, Frank’s life was defined by his devotion to Jesus Christ, his beloved wife, and his family. He shared 68 years of marriage with his wife, Catherine Carroll—a remarkable testament to their enduring love and commitment. Frank called or texted his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren every day, always expressing how much he loved them. He was a stern, steady, tough, and loving presence whose faith, strength, humor, and example will continue to guide those who knew him.

Frank is survived by his wife, Catherine; their three children, Jim (and his wife Pam) Carroll, Marsha (and her husband Jimmy) Luna, and Robert (and his wife Nicole) Carroll; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. All were by his side during his final days—sharing tears and laughter, telling jokes, and recalling stories that reflected what Frank meant to each of them. Among his final reflections were the words, “What a wonderful family.”

He leaves behind a proud legacy of faith, service, love, and devotion to family. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
