Margrit Theresia Vetsch

Margrit Vetsch, 94, passed away peacefully following a brief stay at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park. She was born on July 12, 1932, in Wil, Switzerland, to Berta and Robert Kriech. She grew up helping her parents in their family butcher shop, where she learned the values of hard work, family, and tradition. 

Margrit’s life was filled with love, family, travel, and adventure. While working at Haury and Co. in Lausanne, Switzerland, she met the love of her life, Kurt Vetsch. They married on June 15, 1957, in Lausanne and began a life together that would span more than six decades. In 1958, they moved to Vancouver, BC, Canada, and later lived in Portland, Oregon, where Margrit’s first son Chris was born, and then Lausanne, Switzerland. Subsequently, they moved to Kansas City where Eric, their younger son was born and they have lived since. 

Margrit and Kurt loved to travel and especially enjoyed their annual trips to Switzerland and Steamboat Springs, Colorado. They also traveled to Hawaii, West Palm Beach, Florida, and many other destinations, including taking river cruises around the world. Their travels brought them many wonderful memories and lifelong friendships. 

Margrit was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her two sons, Dr. Chris Vetsch and Eric Vetsch (Susan), and her six grandchildren, Tara (Victor), Hailee (Cameron), Shane, Abby, Anna, and Madelyn. She is also survived by her sister, Rosemarie Berger, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kurt, and her sister, Pia Bichsel. 

Margrit loved staying active and enjoyed hiking, skiing, swimming, playing tennis and bridge; continuing many of these activities well into her 80s. She and Kurt were longtime members of the KC Swiss Society, and she volunteered for a variety of humanitarian organizations. 

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Village Shalom and the nurses of Ascend Hospice for the wonderful care and support they provided to Margrit. 

A service to celebrate Margrit’s life will be held on August 14 @ 1pm at Village Shalom, 5500 W. 123rd Street, Overland Park, KS. 

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to a charity of your choice in Margrit’s memory. 

Margrit will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Her love of family, Switzerland, travel, and an active lifestyle will remain a lasting part of the memories she leaves behind. May she rest in eternal peace and live forever in our hearts.
