Peggy R. Sloyer passed away peacefully at her home in Lenexa, Kansas, on August 22, 2026.

Peggy Rae was born October 24, 1944, in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Henning “Hunk” and Rae Elsasser. She attended Minne Lusa Grade School and McMillan Junior High and was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church.

In 1959, Peggy and her family moved to Topeka, Kansas. She attended Topeka West High School and graduated in 1962. Peggy continued her education at Washburn University, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. While at Washburn, she met the love of her life, Wayne Sloyer. Following graduation, Peggy and Wayne were married on July 9, 1966, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

The newlyweds began their life together as a military family in the United States Air Force, traveling the world throughout Wayne’s career. They were stationed in California, Washington, Arizona, Korea, England, Texas, South Carolina, Hawaii, and Nebraska. Wherever they lived, Peggy and Wayne formed lifelong friendships, and visits from family brought them great joy. In 1991, they retired and returned home to Kansas.

Peggy and Wayne were active members of Atonement Lutheran Church in Overland Park. Peggy enjoyed Bible study and faithfully served her church in many ways, including serving on the missional life team, coordinating reception luncheons, and attending and helping coordinate women’s mission trips to Mexico in partnership with Mano Amiga.

Peggy had countless hobbies and belonged to many groups throughout her life. She enjoyed counted cross-stitch, bridge, crafts, Empty Nesters, WOW, Trough Club, Neighborhood Dine Out, New Neighbors, and her pizza group. She loved the theatre and was a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan. Travel was another of Peggy’s passions, with family trips to Hawaii and adventures with friends among her favorites.

Peggy and Wayne were also proud godparents and were affectionately known as “Aunt Peggy and Uncle Wayne” to six. They treasured family visits, attended countless activities, hosted sleepovers, danced at weddings, celebrated every milestone, and rejoiced as their family grew.

Later in life, Peggy joined The Table for Worship and moved to Silvercrest at College View. There, she enthusiastically participated in activities and found a new family of friends among the residents and staff.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wayne, who passed away in 2008; and many dear friends.

She is survived by her brother, Steve Elsasser (Suzy) of Tucson, Arizona; her sister, Sherry Hodnefield (John) of Overland Park, Kansas; and her brother-in-law, Don Sloyer (Gail). She is also survived by her nieces and nephews: Leslie Elsasser, Pete Elsasser, Brad Hodnefield (Brooke), Becky Duncan (Larry), Matt Sloyer (Stephanie), and Jeff Sloyer; and her great-nieces and great-nephews: Avery Sloyer, Ryan Sloyer, Kate Sloyer, Tyson Hodnefield, Noah Hodnefield, Dash Duncan, Ellie Duncan, and Cooper Duncan.

A celebration of Peggy’s life will be held Saturday, September 12, at Johnson County Funeral Chapel & Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, Kansas. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the service at 2:00 p.m. with a dessert reception to follow.

Burial will take place at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
