Robert R. Johnson

On May 10, 2021, the world lost a loving husband, father and grandfather when Robert “Bob” Ray Johnson died at home after a battle with lung cancer.   A lifelong Huskers fan, Bob enjoyed attending games and watching other college football and basketball teams, PGA golf, as well as cheering on the Chiefs and Royals.

Bob’s enthusiasm for sports began at St. Paul High School in St. Paul, Nebraska, where he played basketball and golf.  He continued his passion for golf at Nebraska Wesleyan University where he was on the golf team and graduated with a business degree in 1971.  He was a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity.

In college Bob met the love of his life, Diane Volkens, and married her on January 9, 1972.  This union produced two sons, Brent Robert and Bradley David.  Throughout their married life, Bob and Diane lived in Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado and Kansas.  After graduation he worked for J. C. Penney, sold life insurance for Northwestern Mutual, and for most of his career sold computer software for Burroughs, R & D Systems, and Tech Systems.  After he retired, he worked part-time in the HyVee meat department, enjoying the interaction with the public that the job entailed.

One of Bob and Diane’s greatest enjoyments was traveling to Arizona in the winter.  He also liked playing golf with his father when his dad was alive and then golfing with his two sons.

Without doubt, Bob found his greatest joy in his family.  He and Diane were married 49 years; he was proud of his sons and so loved his grandchildren, Hannah and Gavin.

Bob is survived by his wife, Diane; his son Brent (Julie) of Prairie Village, KS, and his son Brad (Gina) and their children Hannah and Gavin of Lenexa, KS.  A brother, David, of Sarasota, FL, also survives.  His parents, Dale and Bernie Johnson, predeceased him.
