David Harrison

March 28, 1937 — August 13, 2019

Overland Park, Kansas

David S. Harrison, age 82, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at 8:00 A.M. at his home in the arms of his loving wife of 58 years.

He was born March 28, 1937 in Monett, Missouri, the son of the late James and Lucetta (King) Harrison.

David was a 1955 graduate of Monett High School. He served in the U.S. Navy immediately after high school for a 4 year enlistment. He used his telegraphy training  to obtain a position with the Union Pacific Railroad.

On February 11, 1961 he married Sandra Walton. Wayne, Kent, and Pamela were all born into the family in Maryville, KS.

David accepted a promotion to Train Dispatcher and the family re-located to Overland Park, KS in 1971. David worked the midnight to 8 A.M. shift until he retired in 1994 to be able to participate in evening family activities. The last 4 years of employment, David worked in Omaha and returned home every weekend to be with his loving family.  Avid St. Louis Cardinals Baseball fans, David and Sandra encouraged their children to participate in baseball and softball with "Coach Gentleman Dave" right by their side.

Dave played on the 1959 Navy Champions. He was a constant on the UPRR softball teams, formed a co-ed adult team with the Harrison 5 and other close friends. The team was able to complete the 1990 season undefeated to secure the league championship.

He greatly enjoyed being called Great-Grandpa and during his last week when he could hardly talk, he had the biggest smile and sang to his 9 month great-granddaughter.

David was preceded in death by his son Wayne, Brother James, Sisters Helen Sipes, Frances Hicks, and In-laws Louise and Melvin Halsey who considered him as a son of their own.
