Lorraine Cressman

September 8, 1925 — April 14, 2018

Lorraine Evelyn Cressman (nee Murray), 92, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2018.

The daughter of Albion and Evelyn Murray was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1925. The youngest of three children, Lorraine’s early years were spent with her family along the New Jersey shore and the famed Atlantic City boardwalk. Later, her family moved to the Philadelphia suburb of Upper Darby, PA where Lorraine attended and graduated from Upper Darby High School but she and her family returned frequently to Atlantic City to visit her grandparents, aunts and uncles.

It was toward the end of World War II, during one of those visits, when her mother invited Arthur R. Cressman, an Army Air Force Tech Sergeant returning home from the War, to join them at their table at the Boardwalk’s Steel Pier. Lorraine was a beautiful 19 year old platinum blonde and for TSgt Cressman, it was love at first sight. He vowed to his friend that same night, he would, one day, marry Lorraine.

Arthur and Lorraine were married on July 7, 1945 and their remaining 67 years together was a never ending love story. Their family grew with three children, Art Jr., Jim and Diane. Together, they provided a home for their children that was filled with warmth, love and happiness. In those post-war years, Lorraine was a devoted wife and mother and became a wonderful cook and baker. That love and devotion to her family, kitchen and cooking stayed with Lorraine throughout her entire life. Her pies, cakes and cookies were known by all who knew her and her family couldn’t wait to get Lorraine’s next batch of her “Snicker Doodles”.

Through the next 10 years, Arthur’s company offered them new chapters in their life with job transfers to Pittsburgh, PA and then, in 1958, to the Kansas City area. They bought a beautiful new home in Prairie Village, Kansas but wherever their new house may have been, Lorrraine made it a home. Their family continued to grow over the years where Lorraine enjoyed the love of her 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
