Hugh Gross

Hugh Edward Gross, 81, of Overland Park, KS passed away peacefully at his home on July 26, 2015.  Hugh was born in Atlantic City, NJ on October 2, 1933 to the late James and Catherine (Goodman) Gross.  “Puff” was a graduate of Holy Spirit High School, 1952.  Hugh proudly served our nation from 1952-1956 in the United States Navy on the USS Des Moines and the USS Columbus and was awarded the National Defense Medal, Navy Occupation (Europe) and Good Conduct (1st Award).  After his honorable discharge from the Navy Hugh would go on to serve 21 years with the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia where he would serve as Commander of the 2nd District DC Police Department Reserve Core.  Hugh and his loving wife Sylvia raised their family and resided in Bowie, MD where they were members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 43 years.  Hugh also served as a Eucharistic minister at Sacred Heart for more than 15 years.  Though Hugh left Atlantic City as a young man, he always had “sand in his shoes” and enjoyed returning to Atlantic City/Margate each summer.   Hugh was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Content and always humble he was a devout Catholic and proud American.  Hugh will be loved and missed by all who knew him.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, James and Catherine, brothers, James, Joseph and John Gross, and one sister, Barbara Dziegrenuk.  Hugh is survived by his loving wife Sylvia Anne (Marcheski), daughters, Holly Morrison and husband David (Overland Park, KS) and Elizabeth Bankston and husband Greg (Atlanta, Georgia), six grandchildren, John “Jack”, Katie, Cullen, Mac, Aidan, and Sean Thomas.  He is also survived by numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Gathering and Memorial Service for Hugh will be held at Park Meadows 5901 W. 107th St. Overland Park, KS on Thursday, August 27, 2015 beginning at 1:30pm; Memorial Service at 2pm with refreshments following until 3:30pm.  Hugh will then travel home to Bowie, MD where visitation will be held on Friday, September 4, 2015 from 4-7pm at Beall Funeral Home 6512 Crain Hwy. Bowie, MD 20715. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday. September 5, 2015 at 12noon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Bowie, MD.  Military Honors and Interment will immediately follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Bowie, MD.  All arrangements are under the direction of Johnson County Funeral Chapel & Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Ave. Overland Park, KS 66210.  Services in Maryland will be under the direction of Beall Funeral Home.  For more information or to send condolences online visit www.JohnsonCountyChapel.com or www.BeallFuneral.com.
