Robert Terrill (Terry) Hoyland, 88, died on November 18, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lyla, sister Janet Hoyland, daughter Jane Hoyland, son-in-law Timothy Rassette, grandson Elliot Yochim, and granddaughter Holly Rassette.
Terry was born on October 18,1934 in Kansas City, Missouri to Robert J. and Louise (Worley) Hoyland. He graduated from Southwest High School in 1952 and attended the University of Missouri, Columbia where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Geology. He earned a Master's Degree in Psychological Counseling at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. From 1958 to 1960 Terry served in the United States Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. In 1960 he started his career in education at Ross Middle School in El Paso. He began his tenure in the Shawnee Mission Kansas School District in 1963, teaching Science at Meadowbrook Junior High School. Upon receiving his counseling degree, he became a guidance counselor at Meadowbrook, transferring to Westridge Middle School in 1988. He retired in June 1994. In his retirement he was Poetry Editor for Potpourri Magazine and a member of the Kansas City Writer’s Group. He enjoyed volunteer pastoral work with his church and received a diploma in the four-year EFM (Education for Ministry) course at St. Michael’s. Terry was the long-time Treasurer for the Johnson County Association for Retired School Personnel, delivered Meals on Wheels and participated in many other volunteer projects for the elderly and disabled.

Services will be held on December 7 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 6630 Nall Avenue, Mission, Kansas.
