Betty Thomson Sanders, 90, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on July 30, 2017. She was born on February 20, 1927 in Flint, Michigan to Armorel and Farrell Thomson.
Betty was an only child and the light of her parents’ life. She had a resilience and zest for living every day that lives on with her children and close friends. She put her family first and made many personal sacrifices to provide a strong foundation for her children to find joy in their own lives and pass it on to their families.
Betty would often say that she missed having siblings. She became very close growing up to four girl cousins that she spent every summer with at her mother’s childhood home in Portage du Fort, Quebec.
Growing up in the depression, Betty learned early on to use her creative talent to make things beautiful. She was a wonderful artist and learned to sew well at an early age. Betty not only made her clothes and her mother’s, but also formals for her high school girlfriends.
In later years, Betty designed and made all of her daughters' wedding dresses and bridesmaid gowns' as well as those of other family members and friends. Her daughters knew and appreciated that they would always be the best dressed at the dance.
While she was proud of all of her children’s accomplishments, she was especially proud of her only son Rick’s devotion to his family and special needs son, Allen.
Betty went on to start a seamstress business doing alterations, home décor, and designer fashions. Her children often went to sleep to the hum of her Singer sewing machine.
Betty moved several times with her husband’s career. Each was an opportunity for her to make good friends that she kept close her entire life.
Along with her love of sewing and fashion, Betty had many hobbies. Her favorite, though, was always bridge. She made many of her closest friends over a good hand of cards.
Most of all, her family and friends will remember Betty’s joy of living everyday and humility.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Armorel and Farrell Thomson and husband, Fred T. Sanders, Jr. She is survived by her children, Frederick Sanders (Lucy Sanders), Cynthia Meyer (Mark Meyer), Beth Howard (Ed Howard), and Antoinette Zink (Dr. Tony Zink), her grandchildren Allen Sanders, Loren Sanders, Bobby Howard, Elizabeth Howard, Alex Meyer, Christian Meyer, Henry Zink, Jack Zink, and her sister-in-law, Mary Beth Smith.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at St. Michael’s the Archangel Catholic Church, 14251 Nall Ave., Leawood, KS 66223.
