Beverly L. O'Brien, 79, of Roeland Park, Kan., died on September 2, 2014 in Kansas City, Mo., following complications from hip replacement surgery.
Beverly Lee Johnson was born November 23, 1934 in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of LeRoy L. Johnson and Stella G. Mann. She graduated from Paseo High School in 1953 and worked as a teller at Commerce Bank downtown. She married Fane G. O'Brien on July 19, 1958, and the couple made their home in Roeland Park, where they raised eight children. After Fane's death on June 3, 1984, Beverly raised the three youngest on her own.
Beverly was a talented artist, and all of her children inherited her artistic gifts. She loved poetry, quotations, Impressionist painting, flower gardens and traveling. She was a loving mother who devoted her life to her family, and she will be remembered for her generosity, selflessness and humor.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, and is survived by a brother, Robert D. Johnson of Kansas City, Mo.; four daughters: Kathy L. O'Brien of San Antonio, Texas, Karin L. Cubbage of Hernando, Miss., Kristi M. Shapley of Kansas City, Kan., and Kimberly K. Nelligan of London, Ont.; four sons: Kevin R. O'Brien of Mission, Kan., Kenneth S. O'Brien of Overland Park, Kan., Kerry B. O'Brien of Spring Hill, Kan., and Kent M. O'Brien of Shawnee, Kan.; thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Beverly’s life will be held on Tuesday at Johnson County Funeral Chapel in Overland Park, with visitation at 1:00 P.M. and services at 2:00 P.M. Interment will follow at Johnson County Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Saint Luke's Hospice House.
