Carolyn Sue Morrison Welch was born on March 5, 1944, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Florine and Jim Morrison. She was the second youngest of five children, growing up alongside two brothers and two sisters.
Carolyn spent her early years in Oklahoma City. After graduating from high school, she attended business school, during which time she welcomed her first son, Richard Lee Roberson. In 1966, she moved to Wichita, Kansas, where she worked as an administrative assistant at Lear Jet. While living in Wichita, she welcomed her second son, Chris Allan Roberson.
Carolyn went on to build a successful career in real estate. She became a licensed real estate agent and later a broker with JP Weigand in Wichita, Kansas, where she managed an office for ten years with dedication, professionalism, and care.
On October 14, 1982, Carolyn married Gary Welch. Together, they shared 42 wonderful years of marriage. In 1985, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where they became active members of Colonial Presbyterian Church. This church held special meaning for their family, as many of their children were married there and lifelong friendships were formed.
During her early years in Kansas City, Carolyn managed Halls Fine Jewelry on the Country Club Plaza for seven years. In 1992, she followed her creative passion and founded Carolyn’s Cakes. She quickly became well known throughout the Kansas City area for her beautiful wedding cakes, earning recognition in multiple cake publications, including Bride Magazine for the cake she created for Chris and Joni’s wedding in 1995. After a very successful run, she closed her cake business in 1997.
In retirement, Gary and Carolyn spent their winters in Surprise, Arizona, where they cherished time with friends from across the United States and Canada. They loved hosting gatherings, enjoying pool parties, playing cards, and sharing laughter. Summers were spent in Kansas City and highlighted by annual family trips to Big Cedar with their children and grandchildren—a treasured tradition that continued for 20 years and created countless memories.
Above all else, Carolyn treasured her family. She took great joy in making birthdays and holidays special, always guided by her strong faith and loving spirit. Her warmth, generosity, and belief in celebrating life will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Carolyn is survived by her sons, Rick Roberson (daughter Hailey Roberson) and Chris Roberson (wife Joni Roberson; son Loren Roberson); her stepdaughters, Lindsey Hunsicker (husband Steve Hunsicker; sons Joe Hunsicker and wife Mary Ellen, John Hunsicker and wife Liz, and Sam Hunsicker) and Laura Welch Milbourn (daughter Alexandra Roan and husband James; son Grant Milbourn and wife Kristi; and daughter Annie Milbourn); and eight great-grandchildren.
Carolyn’s legacy lives on in the love she shared, the traditions she created, and the reminder she gave us all of how truly special life can be.
