Cecil Merle Wirtz

It is with sadness and profound gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Cecil Merle Wirtz, who departed this world on April 17, 2026, after a brief illness.

Born on July 16, 1941, Cecil was a beacon of strength, humor, and steadfast dedication to his family and his clients. Cecil was the beloved son of the late Raymond E. Wirtz and Mildred L. Wirtz. Despite these losses, Cecil's life was enriched by the love of his surviving family: his devoted wife, Landa Wirtz; his adored son, Rieter Christian Wirtz; and his treasured grandchildren, Anna Alvarado (Zack Wright) and Nickolas Alvarado (Mackenzie). Cecil was predeceased by his dear parents, his brothers John, Eldon, and Dean Wirtz, his cherished daughter Stephanie Alvarado, and Donna Barr, his former wife and mother of his children.

A man of many talents and interests, Cecil's journey began at Gillette Grove High School, where he laid the foundation for a lifetime of learning and growth. Cecil was trained by his uncle, Merle Chalfant, in the art of barbering, a craft he honed with care and precision. Cecil's career took root at the Colonial Barber Shop on the Country Club Plaza, and he eventually opened the VIP Room in Overland Park, where he continued to build loyal clientele that included multiple generations of families. His clients were loyal, not only for skill but for his friendship. Cecil took particular care of his older clients, reminding them of appointments. His clients came for a haircut and left also with a smile and a warm heart.

Cecil's life was marked not only by his professional achievements but also by the passions he pursued outside of work. An avid golfer, Cecil found peace and camaraderie on the greens. His love for birds brought him joy and serenity, while his keen interest in the stock market kept his mind sharp and engaged.

On December 23, 1996, Cecil married Landa Kliewer. Their union was a testament to enduring dedication and partnership, a bond strengthened by shared experiences and commitment. Together, they created a life filled with adventure and lasting memories.

Cecil will be remembered not only for his dry wit and humor but also for his unwavering devotion to those he loved. His legacy is one of care and purpose. Though he has left this earthly realm, Cecil's spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

A celebration of Cecil's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor a man who touched many lives with his gentle presence and generous spirit. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Great Plains SPCA in Merriam, Kansas.

Cecil Merle Wirtz will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
