Charlotte A. Brown, 87, of Overland Park, KS passed away July 25, 2023, at Kingswood Senior Living Community in Kansas City, MO, surrounded by her loving family and caregivers. Visitation will be held Saturday, July 29 at 10:00 am, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at the Church of the Ascension, 9510 West 127th Street, Overland Park, KS 66213, with a luncheon to follow. Private Burial at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
Charlotte was the daughter of Frank and Virginia Gunselman. She was born November 24, 1935, in Savannah, MO and graduated from Savannah High School. She was enormously proud of the family farm where she was born which continues to produce corn and soybeans under the expertise of Leon Miller. Charlotte received her bachelor's and master's degrees in music education from Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College (Truman State University). For 42 years, she worked as a classroom music and band instructor for the Shawnee Mission Public Schools where thousands of students thrived under her tutelage. In her retirement years, she was extremely active with world travels, church choir, attending concerts with friends and enjoying her family. She was active in philanthropic organizations including Mu Phi Epsilon Music Fraternity where she served as the District Director and Musicale Chair. She attended many international conventions and was honored to be selected the National First Vice President/Extension Officer from 2011-2017. Charlotte was also the President of the Women’s Committee of the UMKC Conservatory. She was a passionate and integral leader in providing scholarships for deserving music students. She also enjoyed spending many years with Alpha Delta Kappa Education Sorority and attending the retired Johnson County Music Teacher luncheons. Charlotte loved her family and her dogs. Through the years, her many Westies were her furry, fluffy, and sweet companions.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Dale E. Brown and her sister Wavalea Oliver. She is survived by her children, Stephen Brown (Susan) and MaryAnn James (David). She is also survived by her grandchildren Drew Brown (Jess), Rachel Uptergrove (Garet), and Jordan James. Additionally, she leaves behind great grandchildren; Blaine Uptergrove, Lily Brown, Hailey Uptergrove, Kaden Brown, Tristan, and Trevor Beckerdite and many nieces and nephews and their families.
