David Daniel Nelsen age 95 of Overland Park Kansas, passed away on Thursday May 8, 2025 at Trustwell Living Facility, Overland Park. Dave was born on September 15, 1929 in Chicago to Charles and Hilda Nelsen, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, brothers Warren, Bob, Phil and Dick and a sister Louella.
He is survived by his daughter Sharon L. Holt (Ron), son David J. Nelsen (Tonia), 5 grandchildren, Angela Randle, Valerie and Jeremy Holt, Juliana and Helena Nelsen and two great grandchildren, Rossi and Beckham Randle.
He grew up in Chicago and graduated from Howard Taft High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Marines, 1951 to 1953, during the Korean War. He met the love of his life, Marilyn Nett in high school and church, where they both attended. They were married nearly 73 years before Marilyn passed away in March of last year.
After serving in the Marines, Dave went to the University of Illinois on the G.I. Bill, receiving a BA degree in Real Estate Finance. He worked for 3 different national insurance companies in commercial real estate lending retiring in 1991.
Dave had a wonderful singing voice and for many years was the song leader and a soloist at Overland Park Assembly of God, where he also taught Sunday School.
He was an accomplished athlete, playing baseball in his younger years and tennis and golf well into his 80’s. In retirement, he volunteered as a golf marshal for a number of years. He also enjoyed watching sports including PGA golf tournaments, the Jayhawks, the Chiefs – but especially baseball – being a lifelong Cubs and then Royals fan, as well. And he lived long enough to see not only multiple Chiefs Superbowl victories, two Royals World Series wins but also a Cubs World Series title after 108 years of waiting.
Dave was a member of Abundant Life Assembly of God and a lifelong follower of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He deeply loved and was devoted to his family, especially his wife Marilyn, to whom he provided loving care during her long battle with dementia toward the end of her life. He will be greatly missed, but one day we will be reunited with him in Heaven and rejoice in God’s presence eternally.
