Dennis Lee Underwood

February 22, 1938 — December 27, 2024

Overland Park, KS

Dennis Lee Underwood was born to Orville A. and Anna S. Underwood on February 22, 1938, in Omaha, NE. He has two siblings, Judith Ann (CO) and James Allen (VA).

Dennis married Donna Odland on August 4, 1956, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Omaha, NE. God blessed their marriage with four children. Our Lord called Dennis from this life to heaven on December 27, 2024, following a long battle with dementia.

Dennis worked in Omaha at Industrial Electric and Fruehauf Corporation as an industrial draftsman. However, most of his career was spent as a fulltime administrator and/or Director of Music at Calvary Lutheran Church in Omaha, NE, Omaha Lutheran Bible School, North Heights Lutheran Church in Shoreview, MN, and Bethany Lutheran Church in Overland Park, KS. Dennis was an accomplished organist and served as church organist in several congregations for many years.

After Donna’s death, Dennis married Betty Middendorf Twitchel on July 19, 2003, in Overland Park, KS. Betty’s children, Ron (Elaine), Linda (Wade), Marla (Greg), and granddaughter Leah all reside in Overland Park, KS. They became a meaningful part of Dad’s extended family.

After retiring, Dennis actively volunteered as a Chaplin for hospice at Olathe and St. Luke’s Hospital. He also enjoyed traveling and cruises. One of his most inspirational destinations was the Holy Land.

Dennis is survived by his wife Betty, his siblings, Judy and Jim, and his sons, John and his wife Denise (AZ), Brian and his wife Ronda (CO), and Douglas and his wife Tammy (MI). Dennis had 9 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

We fondly remember the patriarch of our family as a man of faith. He not only taught us how to live a Christian life, he modeled it for us by his words and actions. Dennis often mentioned the heavenly mansions that await all who are in Christ Jesus. We celebrate his journey of faith that he now fully realizes as he rests in the arms of our Savior. We look forward to seeing him again when our Jesus takes us home to live with him in heaven forever.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Sally Underwood, his wife, Donna, his daughter, Jeanne, and his grandson, Kyle.

A visitation will be held February 1, 2025, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mission, KS at 10:00 am with a memorial service to follow at 11:00.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Dennis' ashes will be interred sometime this Spring in Dows, Iowa alongside Donna.
