Don Miller was born January 7, 1937 and passed away June 29, 2016. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Donna; his two children Kolleen Arnold (Mace) and Bear Miller; two step-sons, Steve Bieszczat (Susan) and Mike Bieszczat; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law’s, Helen, Nancy, Gwen and Cherie, and brother-in-law Lt. Col. Ret’d Bob Staples. Donna’s family considered him their “Hero”!
He was preceded in death by his father, Ed Miller; his mother, Doris Barney; his brother, Dick Miller; 2 nieces, Robyn and Debbie; and a nephew, John.
Don graduated from Paseo High School in 1955 and attended Concordia University in Nebraska on an athletic scholarship. At age 21, he was shot by another student which left him paralyzed from the waist down. To Don this was not a handicap, but an “inconvenience”. Don was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 9 years ago, another “inconvenience”.
He was a court reporter for Johnson County for 23 years. A highlight in Don’s life was being made an Honorary Member of the Johnson County Bar Association. Thank you, members. He was presented the “Don Miller Spirit Award” in 2009 which has been presented each year since in his honor.
Don was loved for his caring manner, his wit (which was equally matched by his wife, Donna), his positive attitude, and his independence and zest for life.
Don showed lots of love for animals, birds, etc. He will be missed greatly by Ping and Charlie (his faithful dogs). Don has many lifelong friends who were with him until the end.
A visitation will be held on Thursday July 7 from 5-7pm at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS. Memorial service will be held at 10am on Friday July 8, also at Johnson County Funeral Chapel.
