Mr. Earle Jones

Earle David Jones, 76, died May 29, 2007, after a short bout of cancer. Earle was born January 12, 1931 in Kansas City, Kansas to Rance and Della Jones. He graduated from Rosedale High School. He received a BBA from UMKC, a JD and an LLM in Criminal Law and Procedure from UMKC Law School. He taught and lectured at UMKC, Johnson County Community College, University of Kansas, Pittsburg State University, University of Nevada, Washburn University, University of Denver Law School, and numerous and various seminars. His expertise was in Criminal Law including evidence, court structure and philosophy, search and seizure, criminal procedure, trial practice and tactics, and executive privilege.

He stated working at age 9 and that started a work ethic that kept him working even after he retired as a District Judge and he became a Senior Judge doing pro tem work. He started law work in the partnership of Keach, Howard, and Jones. He was City Prosecutor and Acting City Prosecutor in these cities in Johnson County, Kansas: Overland Park, Mission, Merriam, Prairie Village, Westwood, Fairway, and Countryside. He was a Municipal Judge in Overland Park from 1966-69. On January 1, 1970, he became Magistrate Judge of Johnson County. In 1977 this Judgeship became an Associate district Judgeship and in 1981 it became a District Court Judgeship. He was a District Court Judge until he retired July, 1993. The lure of the courthouse was still in him so he became a Retired Senior Judge and worked many days pro teming for other judges. He also performed many weddings.

He served in the United States Navy. He was always good at sports. During high school he played football, baseball, and basketball. He earned a football scholarship to Baker University. He was a DeMolay and became a Chevalier DeMolay and started a chapter in Baldwin, Kansas. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, motorboating, traveling, and flying. He learned to fly single engine planes and got his license in 1968.

He is survived by his wife Roberta; his daughter Vanessa, her fianc?e? Miles Graham; his granddaughter Angela, her fianc?e? Joe Henning; his uncle William O?Connell; nephew Michael Jones and niece Deborah Bingham and their families.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 2, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at D. W. Newcomer?s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas. Burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. The family suggests contributions in Earle?s name be made to the Sharon Jones Memorial Library at Atonement Lutheran Church, 9948 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas 66212; the American Cancer Society, or Heartland Hospice.
