Gary King Chumley

Gary King Chumley, 86, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away on October 9, 2026. He was born on October 27, 1939, in Vinita, Oklahoma, to Clark and Edna Chumley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Jean Chumley; his parents, and two brothers, Tom and Bob Chumley.

Gary was a proud union Journeyman Electrician and had achieved Master Electrician certification. He spent his career in commercial construction, working on several landmark projects in Kansas City, including the Stowers Institute and the Century 21 buildings.

Gary served on the Piper USD 203 Board of Education, including a term as its president. Referred to as a “Resistance Leader”, he led the Piper community in standing up against a proposed automobile plant project, and a city annexation attempt.

A man of deep faith and a servant’s heart, Gary always took time to stop and engage with those around him. Gary led Bible study groups and gave himself to mentoring others, volunteered at True Light Family Resource Center, and went on several mission trips. He spent time visiting and sharing meals with friends that were homebound. After hurricane Katrina, he participated in several mission trips to the New Orleans area to help rebuild.

Gary loved his family and loved spending time in the mountains. Nothing gave him more joy than spending time with his grandkids & great grandkids. He always had family on his mind and would ask what the plan was for scheduling the next family gathering. He loved playing golf and learned how to build his own clubs. Gary was a car enthusiast, even pointing out his next “ride” on his last trip around town.

Gary is survived by his daughter, Kathy Schrock (Randy); son Mike Chumley (Brenda); granddaughters, Jessica Schrock, Whitney Gaughan (Eric) and Tara Westerhouse (Aaron); grandsons, David Schrock and Garrett Chumley (Julia); and 13 great-grandchildren; Kerry, Genevieve, Jude, Magdalene, Georgia, Gabe, Maria, Sean, Sunny, Gray, Reese, Brooks and Blair.

Gary will be dearly missed by his family and all whose lives he touched through his faith, his work and his service.
