A long-time resident and business leader in Wichita, KS, George passed away quietly, surrounded by the love of his family, on October 5th at the age of 91, in Overland Park, KS.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carolyn Stover, his son, Ron Stover, his wife Stephanie and their children Morgan and Dylan, as well as grandson, Chris Stover, his wife, Nicole and great-grandson, Knox. He also is survived by his daughter Denise (Stover) Bade, her husband Bill, and their children, Austin, Isabella and Sophia. He will also be missed and remembered by a number of nieces and nephews.
Born November 20, 1922, near Hedville, KS, to Harry and Emma Stover, he served in WW2 and was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army. A graduate of the Chicago Conservatory of Music, he sang professionally and for fun all of his life. In Wichita, George worked for KARD-TV (KSNW) and the Kansas State Network as a broadcaster and promotions manager. He then changed direction and for most of his career worked for Multimedia Cablevision, where he franchised and built cable TV systems throughout the Midwest, including Wichita.
George was an active member of the Rotary and Lions Club, a 33rd Degree Mason, and for many years the director of the Scottish Rite Consistory Choir. An avid sailor, he was an early and long-time member of the Ninnescha Yacht Club. George also loved golf and played countless rounds at McDonald Golf Course and Willowbend Golf Club.
After moving to Overland Park in 2007, George and Carol became leaders within their new community at Grand Court, now Brookdale Place. There he was an active member and president of the Men’s Club and could be found most summer days swimming numerous laps in the pool. George was one of the veterans privileged to enjoy the Honors Flight to Washington D.C. and was very moved by the reception the veterans received. They were praised and honored by servicemen and servicewomen in uniform who greeted them with salutes as they arrived to tour the monuments.
George joined the Resurrection Choir at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection. At 90, he was the oldest member and spent countless joyful hours singing at services and performing at many of the choir’s special concerts and performances.
Never judgmental, over the years George had many friends and admirers. He was a man of faith and great humor; always positive and caring. His love of music, sailing and golf were only second to the love he had for his family and they had for him.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2014, at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, Wesley Covenant Chapel, 13720 Roe Ave, Leawood, KS 66224. A private family entombment will take place at the Johnson County Memorial Gardens, Overland Park, KS.
Memorial contributions may be made in honor of George to Honor Flight Network of Kansas City on their website, www.honorflightkc.org. Checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 46718, Kansas City, MO 64188.
