John Edward Round

September 20, 1944 — November 1, 2021

John Edward Round of Overland Park, Kansas passed away Monday, November 1, 2021 at the age of 77 surrounded in love and comfort.  He was born September 20, 1944 to Charles Z. and Martha J. Round in Kansas City, MO.  John is survived by his wife Janet of 53 years; sister Cindi Jansohn (Jerry); daughters Donna Follick, Laura Sprinkle (Eric), Kathleen Patterson (David); 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

John dedicated his life to service, education, and family.  John joined the United States Navy after graduating from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1962 where he proudly served on board the USS Coral Sea in the Combat Information Center and is a Vietnam veteran.  Upon his return, he re-connected with a dear high school friend whom he would marry, have a family, and share his life with.  John continued his life of service after the US Navy as a police officer for the City of Overland Park for 26 years where he retired as a Major.

John was an avid learner and reader.  John fulfilled his love of learning by earning two undergraduate degrees from Rockhurst University and one master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Kansas.  John served on the Shawnee Mission School Board and was an instructor at both Johnson County Community College and Columbia College.  After retiring from the police force, John continued his education and obtained his CPA certification.  He and his wife Janet owned and operated their own accounting firm for 25 years.

By far John’s greatest reputation was that of a family man.  His greatest pride was his family, children, and grandchildren never missing a concert, game, competition, ceremony, or play and always with his infamous video camera.  He celebrated every year by providing his children and grandchildren with “Pa’s homemade videos” which are dearly treasured by all members of his family.
