John ("Jack") was born on July 2, 1931 in Cameron, Missouri. He was the second child of John V. Brown and Mabel Walker and is predeceased by his sister Caroline Fitzpatrick.
Jack attended Shawnee Mission Rural High School and the University of Kansas where he was a proud member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and a dedicated, lifelong KU fan. After college, and graduating from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Dentistry, he followed in his father's footsteps and pursued a career in family dentistry. He was fortunate to practice in Kansas City, Mo for 54 years and was honored by the state of Missouri for his service.
Jack was an active member of his profession and held a number of leadership roles in dentistry including the Greater Kansas City Dental Society, faculty at University of Missouri at Kansas City, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, Kansas City Dental Club, Kansas City Dental Abstract Club, lecturer at the First World Congress of Oral Implantology at the United Nations and elected member of the "Pierre Fauchard Academy". Jack cherished a special bond with each of his patients and truly enjoyed the practice of dentistry, retiring in 2012.
Family, friends and acquaintances can all acknowledge his many lifelong interests. He was an Eagle Scout and active member of numerous local and national organizations: Jolly Times Outdoor Club, Mission Hills Country Club, Patterson Duck Club, Fontana Duck Club, University of Kansas Alumni Association, Phi Delta Thera Alumni Association, U.M.K.C. Dental School Alumni Association, Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity, International Military Vehicle Preservation Society, Vanguard Men's Club, Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl.
To his children and best friends, Jack will be remembered most for his love of the outdoors, duck hunting, Fontana Farms, Winstead's Steakburgers, chocolate milkshakes, the art of outdoor cooking, duck calling, cherry pie, fishing trips, KU basketball, restoring WWII military Jeeps, engineering reparative solutions to anything broken , (radios, electronics), and inventing toys for his children. He truly cherished his lifelong friendships from childhood, college and professional endeavors. We are especially grateful for the love and understanding of so many people who enriched his life.
Jack was very proud of his children; Jeb (Ketta) of Laguna Beach, CA, Mindy, Overland Park, Susan (Bob) Brentwood, TN and Mike (Renee) Montclair, NJ. He was thrilled to be the grandfather of seven: Michael, Kacky, Sarah, Annie, Brett, Megan and Peter. Jack passed peacefully on August 3, 2017, just one month after celebrating his 86th birthday.
Services for Jack will be held at Johnson County Chapel and Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS on August 26, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Children's Mercy Hospital, 2401 Gilliam Rd., Kansas City, MO.
