Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Lucia (Lucy) Cheng, age 84, formerly of Houston, TX, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, KS. Per her wishes, cremation is planned. Memorial mass will be Saturday June 24 10am at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Leawood, KS. Celebration of Life reception is planned afterwards 11:45am – 1pm at Brookdale Overland Park 119th in the pub area of the facility.
Born May 26, 1938, in Wuhan, Hu Pei province, China, Lucy is the daughter of Mr. Yun-Ti Chao and Mrs. Pin-Yu (Chang) Chao. She grew up in Taipei, Taiwan, the second daughter out of five siblings. After graduating from Ming Chuan College of Commerce, she worked at Mobil China Chemical Company, where she met Sam. She moved to the United States in 1967, where she and Sam married in Cookeville, TN, a small college town. They were happily married just shy of 56 years.
Lucy was a loving wife and mother who also worked at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston as a clerk until she retired in 2001. She loved to cook, travel, and spend time with her family. She and Sam lived in the Houston, TX, area for 40+ years, where they were active in the Chinese community there. They moved to Overland Park, KS in 2021, where they made new friends at Brookdale 119th. Lucy is survived by her adoring husband, Sam, her daughter Christine Cheng and husband Clint Walker of Leawood, KS; her daughter Jennifer Cheng of New York, NY; her son Jonathan Cheng and wife Ginger Greatens of Dallas, TX; her sister Mary Lu and family of Carlsbad, CA and Altamonte Springs, FL; her sister Cecilia Chen and family of Taipei, Taiwan; and her brother Peter Chao and family of Taipei, Taiwan. She has two grandchildren, Stella and Louis Cheng, of Dallas, TX. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ben Chao.
