Lucille Gunn

March 1, 1915 — March 1, 2007

Lucille Marie Gunn, 92, of Kansas City passed away on March 1, 2007, at The Foxwood Springs Living Center in Raymore, Missouri. After a long and full life, Lucille eventually succumbed to various infirmities brought on by old age.

Lucille was born June 2, 1914 in Marion, Iowa to Fred and Maude Holsinger. She graduated from Marion High School in 1932 and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, where she met her husband Robert E. Gunn. Lucille and Bob married in 1935 and chose to live in the Denver Colorado area before moving to Prairie Village, Kansas, in 1953.

First and foremost, Lucille was a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker. She believed strongly in having a happy home. Lucille had many talents, interests, and hobbies which brought her into contact with hundreds of people all over the world, many of whom she counted as friends. An expert bridge player, she went on seven Caribbean Bridge Cruises where she met bridge icon Charles Goren. In 1973 she founded and hosted ?Lucille?s Bridge Club? which lasted thirty years. Lucille was an avid collector of Antique Figural Silver Napkin Rings, and built one of the premier collections in the Midwestern United States. An excellent seamstress she made countless articles of clothing and quilts for family, friends, and charity. Her talents included working in ceramics where she made myriad pieces, most of which she gave away to people she knew. Lucille was a good singer and participated The Sweet Adelines, performed in her high school musicals, and sang in various church choirs in Iowa, Colorado, and Kansas. As an amateur pianist, she played numerous recitals in her youth and even wrote original music for the piano. Always the competitor, Lucille was at all times ready to play any kind of board or card game, and win. She read modern fiction voraciously and wrote a children?s Christmas story which was sold commercially as well as a short autobiographical booklet describing her first ten years of marriage. Lucille was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Tri Delta sorority.

Lucille was preceded in death by her sister Mildred Kiehl and husband Robert. Survivors include her daughter Kathleen Guthrie and husband George, her son Douglas and daughter-in-law Mary, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A private family graveside service will be held at Johnson County Memorial Gardens on Tuesday March 6, 2007. An open house for friends and acquaintances to memorialize Lucille will be held at Doug and Mary Gunn?s house, Leawood, from 12-3 PM that same day.

In lieu of flowers the family recommends memorial gifts be to Foxwood Springs Living Center or Kansas City Hospice.
