Mary Ann Files

Mary Ann Files, beloved mother, partner, family member, and friend, passed away on May 8, 2026, at the age of 86.

Mary Ann was born in Escondido, California, to James and Helen Langford and joined her older brother Charles W. Langford. She spent much of her childhood and teenage years in North Platte, Nebraska. It was in North Platte that Mary Ann met her high school sweetheart, Richard Lloyd Files. They married on August 28, 1960. Mary Ann and Richard were married for 24 years and had two children, Devin and Christina Files. Mary Ann, a graduate of Stephens College, was known for her elegance, warmth, humor, generosity, and quiet strength. She dedicated her life to caring for others and had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, comfortable, and supported.

She was a devoted and supportive mother who always encouraged her children to pursue their passions and live authentically. Her unconditional love, encouragement, and belief in others left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Mary Ann loved music, going to the movies, animals, and time spent with family. She especially enjoyed the music of Johnny Mathis, Patti Page, and Doris Day and cherished simple moments together with loved ones. Her years selling Mary Kay Cosemetics brought her tremendous joy and gave her a strong sense of purpose and community. She will be remembered for her wit, kindness, grace, and caring spirit.

Mary Ann shared a deeply loving and devoted relationship with Lester Wheatley, her long-term partner of over 40 years. Their enduring companionship brought great joy and comfort to them

both. Lester remained steadfast in his love and support for Mary Ann through every stage of her later years. Their relationship was a beautiful example of commitment, compassion, and enduring love.

She is survived by her daughter, Christina Files and son, Devin Files (D. Brooke Meyers), Lester Wheatley, his son Perry Wheatley, extended family members, and many dear friends.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the administrative and memory care nursing staff at Pegasus Landing of Overland Park and the staff at Ascend Hospice for the compassion and care shown to Mary Ann throughout her time there. Their kindness and dedication brought comfort not only to her but also to all who loved her.

Mary Ann will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
