Mary Lewellwyn Gwaltney Sweet, 86, passed away Aug. 31, 2014, at her home in Overland Park, Kan. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Avenue. Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014 also at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel. Interment will be Thursday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m., at Springfield (MO) Veterans Cemetery, with her husband, Orville K. Sweet.
Lew was born July 5, 1928, in Fort Smith, Ark., the daughter of Troy and Eva (Gallaher) Gwaltney. She was married to Orville Kenneth Sweet on May 25, 1946, in Duncan, Okla.
She was a long time member of the Overland Park Church of Christ and a pioneer for the Mother’s Day Out program in the 1970’s.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville, her son, Michael L. Sweet, and her great-granddaughter, K.J. Edwards. She is survived by daughters Cinda (Lynn) Edwards, Lisa (Dan) Cambridge, and Eva Sweet, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
