Michael Richard Kay, born on March 8, 1945, in Cleveland, Ohio, departed this life on December 20, 2025, in Overland Park, Kansas. He lived a life filled with purpose, achievement, and laughter, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
A proud graduate of West Virginia University, Michael had a remarkable career in sales, beginning with Edy's Ice Cream, which was part of the Dreyes Sales family. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his own ice cream business, where he thrived in an industry he loved. Even in retirement, he remained a force in sales, achieving the notable distinction of being among the top 10 in sales for Golf Galaxy while working part-time. Michael was known for being an exceptionally talented salesman, whose dedication and expertise were evident throughout his career.
Michael’s military service in the United States Army shaped part of his character, instilling in him a sense of discipline and commitment. He ventured through life with a vivacious personality, never having met a stranger he couldn’t share a joke with. His reputation as a hard-headed yet brilliant individual garnered admiration from those around him.
Throughout his life, Michael resided in various cities including Pittsburgh, Worcester, Wheeling, Indiana, Morgantown, Chicago, and Wisconsin; however, he found a true home in Kansas City, where he spent 50 cherished years. Despite settling in Kansas City, his heart was always with the Lake of the Ozarks, particularly in Laurie, Missouri, a place that brought him much joy.
Michael had an array of interests that reflected his vibrant spirit. He relished golfing and fishing, enjoyed watching murder mystery shows, and had a competitive edge when it came to playing Yahtzee. Known for his sweet tooth, he loved sampling a little bit of every dessert offered. His fondness for anything related to England was another colorful facet of his personality, and he took great pleasure in caring for his beloved dog, Ash.
Michael is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Kay, and their children, Emily Kay and John Kay. He is also remembered by his siblings, Charles Kay, Nancy Ray, and Patty Kazi. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles M. Kay and Jeanne P. Kay.
