Michael D. DeCann

February 4, 1972 — August 24, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Michael “Mike” DeCann announces his passing after a long, courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 48, on Monday, August 24, 2020.

Born February 4, 1972, his parents Myron and Jackie DeCann moved Michael from Newark, NY, to Shawnee, KS at the age of 2. Mike met his wife of 28 years, Kimberly in 1990, marrying young, moving to Lenexa, KS and raising their two boys, Nicholas and Alexander, the lights of his life. Mike is survived by his doting mother Jacqueline “Jackie” DeCann, mother-in-law Donna Yarber, brother-in-law Kevin Yarber,  his best friend and chosen brother, Tim Wright (Gwen), upstate New York family including Uncle Jerry and Aunt Kathy, cousins Jerry (Aria), Sarah (Dale), and many other aunts, uncles and cousins that cared for him deeply. Mike was preceded in death by his father Myron DeCann, grandmother Crystal Matthews, Grandmother Elizabeth Colacino, and father-in-law Dennis Yarber.

Mike enjoyed simplicity, his life was filled with family, friends, and his loyal companion, Rusty. Mike enjoyed traveling, some of his favorite trips were to the coast of Oregon, sandy beaches in South Carolina and Florida, and family visits in upstate New York. He enjoyed exploring local breweries, unique restaurants, and attending rock concerts. He treasured moments at the Lake of the Ozarks helping with projects before kicking back and relaxing into a late night. His friends describe him as a thoughtful gift giver, funny sense of humor, with a boisterous laugh that no one will forget. Mike took pride in his music catalog; he was always ready to supply an endless playlist to keep the momentum going, appeasing all genres while holding tight to his love of hard rock. A recent fond memory was his celebration playlist celebrating the Chiefs winning the Superbowl, kicking it off with We Are the Champions!

Mike will be greatly missed by all that had an opportunity to know him. Funeral Service and interment for Mike will be held graveside on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at 12:00 p.m., at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, 9501 W 159th Street, Overland Park, KS 66221. A celebration of life will be held at RJ’s Bob-Be-Que Shack, 5835 Lamar Avenue, Mission, KS Saturday from 2-5:00pm.
