Patricia S Akins

April 27, 1938 — April 29, 2024

Blue Springs

Patricia “Pat” Akin was born in Pittsburg, KS on April 27, 1938, to Roland and Suzie Dray. She was proud of the fact that on the day of her 14th birthday, she got her first job at the Puritan Dairy serving ice cream. She graduated from Pittsburg High School, where she enjoyed playing tennis and swimming. She lived in Pittsburg until she was 18, then moved to Kansas City and got a job with the Kansas City Life Insurance Co.

Shortly after, she moved to Los Angeles, CA, and worked as a secretary. It was there she met her future husband, Lyle Akins, and married in 1960. Together they moved to Denver, CO. Once in Denver, her husband decided he wanted to become a preacher, so he left his job at the airlines, and went to seminary school. Pat helped him with his studies until he graduated and got a preaching position in Lewiston, ID.

Pat was a preacher's wife for three years when they decided to do a different type of ministry and moved to Portales, New Mexico, to be house parents at the New Mexico Christian Children's Home. She was a house mother to a number of children in the time she was there, many of whom, 50 years later, were still in contact with her.

The family later moved to the Kansas City area where she was a stay-at-home mom and wife. She worked as an election judge for Kansas City, KS, for many years. She ran a food pantry and clothing room at her church, where many people benefited from her efforts.

Her hobbies included sewing, studying the bible, and taking care of her yard and flowers. Pat enjoyed watching most sports, especially her Denver Broncos. She was also a loyal Kansas Jayhawk.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Lyle Akins. She is survived by her three children: Felicia Barton; Tim Akins and Jim Akins and her five grandchildren: Amanda Jones; Miles Osborn; Garrett Akins; Katie Akins and Ella Akins. She also had quite a few great-grandchildren.
