Piotr Michal Zygmunt

August 14, 1979 — January 3, 2024

Overland Park

Our beloved husband, father, son, uncle, and friend, Piotr Michal Zygmunt died on Wednesday, Jan 3, 2024, at age 44, of a heart attack at our lakehouse, his happy place, in Linn Valley lakes.

Piotr was born to Jan and Ela Zygmunt on August 14, 1979 in Wroclaw, Poland. He moved with his parents to Lawrence, KS in 2nd grade in 1988. It was not easy moving to the U.S. and attending school in a country he did not speak the language. Piotr quickly found a sense of belonging in Lawrence when he developed his love, commitment, and passion for the KU Jayhawks, and this helped him feel at ease. He spent many days after school at Allen Fieldhouse watching practice (and taking a few shots himself!). His parents moved to Boulder, CO when Piotr was a senior in high school where he graduated from Boulder High School in 1998. Piotr quickly moved back to Lawrence to attend KU as a freshman in the fall of 1998.

Piotr went on to attend the University of Kansas, where he majored in Communications. And, it was at KU where he met his future wife and best friend, Jenny Zygmunt, in 2001. Piotr proposed to Jenny in her favorite city - Seattle, WA - at Kerry Park in 2004 and they were married in June, 2005, in Leawood, KS. Jenny and Piotr have 4 children - Colin (13), Blake (12), Trevor (9), and Olivia (6), and Piotr’s family was the center of his life. As a Dad, Piotr was lucky enough to attend KU games and camps with his family and instill the same passion for his Jayhawks in his kids that he held. Piotr used his love of family and sports to coach many different basketball teams for his kids and their friends. He was involved at the kids' school and loved to plan the class parties for all of his kids. He also served on the homeowners association board for their neighborhood as the social chair. Additionally, he had a passion for baseball ballparks and would take his family on vacations surrounding baseball. His boys have learned the art of getting autographs and catching as many fly balls at each game as possible. Having fun was one of Piotr's main goals in life. Piotr also used his talents and built a successful career at OneDigital, where he worked for the past 5 years.

Piotr was quiet and lighthearted but was over the top on everything he did, and it made him so much fun to be around. He dressed up as the Grinch many times at Christmas for his family, hosted dance parties for the kids in the back of his car to keep them entertained at extended family gatherings, and could always be found with a ball in hand for a good game of catch. Piotr was obsessed with Halloween and Christmas lights and his house became the "must see" house of the season for all of the kids and neighbors in the area.

Piotr didn’t have a selfish bone in his body. He was from a small family and not used to the “loud” of large families but had such an impact in his own way. One of the highlights from Piotr’s life over the past couple of years was the family lakehouse. It was his happy place to get away, he loved spending time out at the lake, fishing and being outside. He learned how to maintain and drive the boat and loved hosting family and friends. He was the captain of the ship and loved to entertain the kids on the boat and tubing. Piotr impacted so many lives.

Piotr is survived by his wife, Jenny, and his children, Colin, Blake, Trevor, and Olivia; his parents, Jan and Ela Zygmunt; his in-laws and nieces and nephews, Tom Moore and Judy Moore, Kristin and Chad Bechard (Emily, Molly, Annie), Ryan and Karen Moore (Savannah, James, Emmeline), and Kevin and Eunice Moore.
