Louisburg

Ricardo Aculina Labayen, 84, entered eternal rest on December 5, 2025. A Celebration of Life will take place at Johnson County Funeral Chapel & Memorial Gardens on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at 11am.

Dr. Ric as he was affectionally called by those that knew him was born on April 3, 1941 in Binalbagen Negros, Philippines to Togo and Carolina (Aculina) Labayen. He graduated with a medical degree from The University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines in 1965. It was during that time he met his wife of 48 years, Nenita Medel. They would move to Minneapolis, Minnesota to begin a new life and raise their three children, Gerry, Cecilia and Cindy with loving care and support. Dr. Ric completed his residency in Minnesota and North Dakota. Eventually he moved the family to Overland Park, KS in October 1978. Dr. Ric worked in the Emergency Room at the Old Menorah Medical Center in Kansas City from 1978 to its close in 1996. Afterwards he worked in urgent care at the University of Kansas MedWest in Shawnee, KS until his retirement in 2007. Through his medical career, his friends and patients loved him...always using his dry Filipino humor to put a smile on their faces.

He was a member of the Filipino Association of Greater Kansas City and Philippine Medical Society of Greater Kansas City. Dr. Ric loved the sport of bowling as he participated in numerous leagues until he physically was unable to. He retired from the sport around the year 2000. Ric loved rooting for the Kansas City Royals, Chiefs and Kansas Jayhawks. If you drove by his home of 37 years, you would see his rock garden display on the front lawn honoring the teams he so loved.

Survivors include son Gerry (Marjorie), daughters Cecilia (Karl) and Cindy; grandchildren Kameron and Francis; sister-in-law Imelda.

He was preceded in death by his father Togo, his mother Carolina and brothers Alan and Eduardo.

The family would like to especially thank the staff at Louisburg Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for their care of our Dad the past two years.
