Sanford Shapiro, affectionately known as Sandy, and to his beloved grandchildren as “Papas,” age 86, of Lawrence, Kansas, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026, at home, surrounded by his loved ones.
A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, Sandy loved the Lord deeply and shared that love with everyone he met. He lived his faith not only through words, but through action—by caring for others, giving generously, and always being willing to help anyone in need. Sandy was a faithful member of Wyandotte Tabernacle, as well as, Lees Summit Baptist where he especially cherished his men’s Bible study and the fellowship it brought. He was known for his loving spirit, generous heart, and genuine kindness.
Sandy was most admired for his 65-year marriage to his loving and faithful wife, Joyce Shapiro, and for how deeply he cherished the family they built together. His devotion to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was evident in the way he loved, served, and supported them throughout his life. Their marriage stood as a beautiful testimony of commitment, faith, and enduring love.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Shapiro; his children Steve Shapiro, Kevin Shapiro, Laura Shapiro Olsen, and Jason Shapiro Sr.; his daughters-in-law Robyn Shapiro, Martha Shapiro and Jayme Shapiro; and his son-in-law, Mike Olsen. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren Derek Shapiro (wife Rachel Shapiro), Jordyn Shapiro, MaLaya Shapiro (husband Michael Burns), Jason M. Shapiro Jr., Jaron Shapiro, Madisyn Shapiro, Irelyn Shapiro, Brooklyn Shapiro, and JoLee Olsen; his great-granddaughters Mailyn and Marceline; and his sister, Janice Chick.
Sandy was preceded in death by his father Hymen Sam Shapiro, his mother Pearl Shapiro, and his brother Ronald Shapiro.
While we grieve his passing, we rejoice in the assurance that Sandy is now at peace in the presence of the Lord.“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
