Sharlyn Marie Harlan (born Sharlyn Husbands) passed away peacefully at her home in Mission, Kansas, on May 27, 2025, at the age of 76.
Born on December 19, 1948, in Kansas City, Missouri, she remained a lifelong resident of the greater Kansas City area. Sharlyn was the beloved wife of Richard Harlan, who cherished her throughout their life together. She is deeply adored by their three children—Rich Harlan, Sherry Harlan, and Sally Cheyne. Her steady devotion, endless patience, and unconditional love shaped their lives in ways that are immeasurable.
Her legacy continues through her nine grandchildren: Braden Riley, Anna Cheyne, Grace Cheyne, Evan Cheyne, Sophia Cheyne, Daisy Harlan, Sage Harlan, Violet Evans, and Ricoh Harlan. She is also survived by her loving sister, Jeannie Akins, and her nephew, Robert Butcher, along with his wife Yvonne and their daughters, Gina and Serina.
Sharlyn earned a master’s degree in microbiology and dedicated her career to the service of others as a laboratory scientist and manager at Providence Medical Center and the University of Kansas Medical Center. She brought care, quiet leadership, and a calm constancy to every part of her work.
An active member of Unity on the Plaza, Sharlyn’s faith was most clearly expressed through the way she lived—with love, grace, and generosity toward others. Known for her genuine warmth, gentle patience, and calming presence, she made those around her feel deeply loved and heard. Her quiet steadiness, thoughtful intelligence, and deep compassion left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
