Shirley Young, 96, of Lenexa, KS, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2014. The daughter of Hazel and Henry Clifton, she was born and graduated high school in New York, NY.
Her mother was a dancer for the Ziegfeld Follies in New York City and her father was a concert violinist with the New York Philharmonic. Shirley graduated from Gaines Business College and then worked for Hearst Magazines as a secretary in the advertising department. She met her first husband, Bob Lewis, at church. They became good friends and dated for five years before marrying in 1942. After World War II, Bob worked for St. Regis Paper Company in Oswego, New York. The job transferred a few times which is what brought them to the Kansas City area. Shirley then worked for Roseland School and for Shawnee Mission School District as a secretary. Bob passed away in 1967 after a long illness. Shirley met her second husband, George Young at a singles dance. They dated for one year and were married in 1975. George was a professor at UMKC Dental School. During retirement they traveled all over the world and enjoyed 32 years of marriage before George’s passing in 2007. Shirley was an avid dancer in ballroom and square dancing. She was a volunteer at numerous hospitals for ten years. She enjoyed singing in the chorus, painting, reading, knitting and crocheting. She volunteered for many years at her church on the caring committee and as chairman of the music committee, while teaching English to foreigners as a second language for the Johnson County Library Program. She leaves behind her two children, Paul Lewis of St. Peters, Missouri, Barry Lewis of Olathe, Kansas, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Memorial service will be 11AM on Friday, October 3, 2014 at Shawnee Mission Unitarian Universalist Church, 9400 Pflumm Rd, Lenexa Ks. 66215. Inurnment services will be for the immediate family only.
