Shiyu Shen (沈世瑜) passed away October 7, 2022 in Overland Park, KS.
Shiyu was born in Tianjin, China on June 27, 1943 to Huiyuan Shen (沈汇源) and Jiamin Chen (陈嘉敏). She grew up in a household with her younger sister and brother, helping each other during the difficult years leading to the Cultural Revolution. After high school, she was admitted to the top university in China - Peking University.
Despite the interruption of the Cultural Revolution, she graduated with a master’s degree in Chemistry and headed to the newly formed research university - University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) teaching Chemistry to classes of gifted youth and other students. After an opportunity in 1989 to visit Canada and USA as a visiting scholar, Shiyu got to know Kansas City very well. In 1993, after establishing a new laboratory in USTC studying positron annihilation, she came to UMKC to continue scientific research until her retirement.
Shiyu loved sweet deserts, singing, and traveling with her family. Traveling between China and USA, she has visited many places and have made great memories at those places with her family. Shiyu is loved by many for her infectious laughter and her excitement in enjoying the company of friends and families. She will be missed dearly.
Shiyu is survived by her sister Shiqi Shen (沈世琦); her brother Shixiang Shen (沈世祥); her son and daughter-in-law Ke Huang and Jingyuan Zhang; her granddaughters Victoria and Katherine Huang; nieces, and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 14 from 3-5pm at Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave. Overland Park, KS 66210.
