Born on the family farm in Jasper, Missouri, Tom embodied the values of hard work, humility, and quiet determination throughout his life. He was the first member of his family to attend college, earning an engineering degree from the Missouri School of Mines at Rolla. His career took him overseas with an international oil company, where he lived and worked in France and Libya. Those years sparked a lifelong fascination with world affairs and the people and cultures he encountered around the globe.
After returning to the United States to earn his MBA, he settled in Kansas City, where he began his lifelong career in investment management while continuing to acquire farmland throughout the Midwest. He married Gretchen R. Told, and together they welcomed their daughter, Nicole Kristine Gresham, in whom he instilled his curiosity about the world and a lifelong interest in the stock market. Tom arrived at his office early every morning to prepare for the market opening, continuing this routine until just a few days before his passing.
He was a devoted father, a proud father-in-law to George S. Perry and Robert S. Honeyman Jr., and a loving grandfather to Jordan Bliss Perry, who brought him immense pride and joy. Although Nicole and her family lived in New York City, Tom loved hearing about their accomplishments and travels around the world.
More than two decades ago, Tom met his beloved life partner, Judy Overton. Together they blended their wide circle of friends, creating a home where guests were always warmly welcomed. While Tom loved spending time with Judy’s family and was a steadfast supporter of Judy’s many philanthropic endeavors, he was equally happy spending time with his cherished “gang of guy friends,” organizing their weekly outings, where good food, laughter, and enduring friendships were always on the menu.
Tom will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, wit, and unmistakable Midwestern warmth. His curiosity about the world, gracious spirit, and genuine interest in others touched all who knew him. He leaves behind family and friends who will miss him deeply and remember him with great affection.
A memorial service and internment will be held at 1pm on July 1 at Johnson County Memorial Chapel and Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA).
