Vernon Eugene Sexton “Gene”, 88, of Lenexa, passed peacefully into the arms of his savior on April 10, 2026 after battling Parkinson’s Disease.
Gene was born November 9,1937 in Wild Cherry, Arkansas to Vernon and Zela Sexton. The middle child of 3 sons. Life was challenging on the farm without electricity or refrigeration. He milked cows, had a paper route, sold animal pelts for extra money along with helping his family with other chores. They eventually moved to Overland Park, Kansas in 1952.
Gene was an accomplished businessman owning as many as 6 service stations throughout the metro area through his working career.
He was also a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church in Olathe since 1967 until his death. Helping build the church and parsonage at 15285 US 169 HWY. As a member of the church he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Bus Driver, and Trustee along with other responsibilities through the years.
One of Gene’s favorite pastimes was spending time with family. Helping fix things around the house, attending the grandkids programs at school, coloring Easter eggs, decorating Christmas cookies, fishing, going to family get togethers and giving wise and loving advice.
Gene was a hard worker, a great provider, and a loving family man. A little onery but always available when needed.
Gene was preceded in death by many family members including his parents Vernon and Zela Sexton and two brothers, Ernest and Clifton Sexton.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia Sexton “Ginger”,
four children: Brad Casey, Teresa (Tim) Bauer, Rodney Sexton, and Randy (Wendy) Sexton:
7 Grandchildren: Sarah (Frank) Openchowski, Matthew (Emily) Bauer, Daniel (Savannah) Bauer, Caleb Sexton, Elizabeth (Josh) McClary, Andrew Sexton and Benjamin Sexton
8 Great Grandchildren: Sophia Bauer, Ana Bauer, Timmy Bauer, Ellie Bauer, Tommy Bauer, Eden Lantz, Jackson McClary and Baby boy Bauer due in September.
Gene’s love, kindness, generocity, wisedom and faithfulness will leave a lasting legacy to his family, his church and all who knew and loved him.
