Obituary

Hugh McCaughey, age 94, of Leawood, Kansas, died April 12, 2022. Hugh was a man of God, family, country and a member of America’s Greatest Generation. He celebrated 64 years of marriage with his high school sweetheart, Marjorie.  He was born on March 18, 1928 to Marguerite O’Donnell and Joseph McCaughey. Hugh had a profound and simple mission statement as a physician of Internal Medicine: “In order to care for the patient, one must care for the patient”. He lived this every day and truly cared for his patients, treating them as if they were family. As a husband, father, and grandfather he was committed to being a positive influence as a provider, leader, mentor and thinker. He encouraged us to pursue our own God-given gifts in life.  He also enjoyed sharing his love of great food and wine with his friends and family.

He was a graduate of the University of Kansas and University of Kansas Medical School specializing in Internal Medicine. He served two years in Germany as a Medical Army Officer with the 74th armored Field Artillery Battalion. During his service as Captain, he received an award for Outstanding Medical Detachment.

He was in private practice for 62 years in the greater Kansas City area. He was fortunate to have collaborated with respected colleagues throughout his career, including Dr. John Dunlap, along with his dedicated staff. His life’s work was dedication to his patients with privileges at Saint Luke’s Hospital, Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Menorah Hospital. Hugh is preceded in death by his wife Marjorie (Jenree) McCaughey. He is survived by his children Mark McCaughey (Rebecca), Amy Setter, Ann Killen (Mark) and grandchildren David Setter, Matthew Killen (Lauren), John Killen, Kevin McCaughey, and Georgia Killen. Hugh was preceded in death by his beloved Macie Gracie and countless other furry best friends throughout his and Marjorie’s life.
