Obituary

Virginia Ann Herring Toll of Overland Park, Johnson County, Kansas was born on Friday, March 11, 1932, to Vera Louise Barger Herring and Ralph Herring in Lucas County, Iowa. She married Carroll Eugene Toll on Monday, July 16, 1951, in Des Moines, Des Moines County, Iowa. They celebrated 64 years of marriage prior to his death in 2015. Virginia died on Sunday, July 18, 2021, in Overland Park at age 89.

Virginia graduated from Derby (Iowa) High School in 1950, lettering in basketball. She and her family moved to Overland Park in 1962 where her husband Carroll worked for the United States Postal Service. Virginia had excelled in 4-H projects and was an excellent wife, mother, homemaker, and cook and soon chose a career in Cafeteria Services with the Shawnee Mission School District, where she retired as Manager of Food Services Catering. She was an active member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was blessed by years of ringing with its handbell choir. Virginia loved volunteering at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens and Cross-Lines Community Outreach when she was able.

Virginia was a talented artist and tole painter, and with her husband created hand-painted woodworking treasures worthy of a museum. She treasured every moment spent with her family, most especially with her granddaughters and great-grandchildren. Virginia loved sports and games, faithfully watching her Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs, as well as playing bridge, canasta, hand and foot, Rummikub, Sudoku, and doing jigsaw puzzles. She was an avid reader, mastering the art of a large font e-reader in her mid-80s. Always an active walker, Virginia had taken up Tai Chi in recent years. She had a heart of gold and such a sweet grace that she instantly made friends wherever she went.

Virginia was predeceased by her parents, her husband, brothers William Ray Herring and Clyde Ralph Herring, sister-in-law Minnie Mae Townsen Herring, niece DeAnn Lugar Campbell, and nephew Ricky Allen Herring.

Virginia is survived by her sons Ralph Eugene Toll (Carol Ann Wiley Toll) of Plano, Texas and Paul Allan Toll (Katherine Irene Dawkins Toll) of Overland Park, granddaughters Jessica Corryn Toll and Vanessa Anne Toll Wuesthoff (Nicholas Alan Wuesthoff), great-grandson James Loki Rosenzweig, and great-granddaughters Brooklynn Paige Wuesthoff and Kinsley Anne Wuesthoff.
